Play Therapy

We offer counseling for children with anxiety, sadness or behavioral problems and this is often done via play therapy. Child centered play therapy allows for children to use toys, storytelling, and art to express their experience while creating some distance by communicating difficult emotions and experiences through themes and metaphor. Child therapists who use play therapy have specialized training to help children process difficult events and reduce symptoms. Children’s brains are not yet fully developed and this can limit their full capacity to talk about, process or understand their complex and difficult feelings the same way an adult might.  Children use play and toys in the same way as adults use words.  Play therapy can be appropriate for children aged 3-12, though this depends on their development. Counseling therapy for children may also include family therapy. We have child therapists in both the Woodbury, MN office, also serving neighboring St. Paul, MN, Maplewood, MN and Oakdale, MN, and also in Sauk Rapids, MN near St. Cloud, MN.
